The Goodnight Love Poem
by Marya Ophir
Goodnight and goodbye,
God knows, I’ve cried enough for you,
fought all my life to keep you happy!
Let chance take its shots,
you left me pot-marked
in a world blacker than a pitch-dark night,
only a poem between me and the grave.
Oh, goodnight, I don’t blame you;
how could I have ever resisted you?
It was no fault of your own
that God gave you a soul like that.
Had we never spent that night together,
had you never told me such secrets,
then what would this emptiness be to me,
but something shallow,
instead of this chasm I can’t cross?
I throw dirt upon your long box
and wonder about what lies within.
That inert bulk, however shapely, was never you,
but then again what was and where have you gone?
Oh, goodnight, my love, I’d give you one last kiss,
a slow motion farewell upon lips warmed only by my tears,
but they keeping heaping more and more dirt upon you
until you are gone from sight.
Good night and farewell, my love, goodnight.
Short Goodnight Poems
by Eclectic Minstrel
1
Goodnight, says the dog,
to the little kitten,
and lays down beside it,
licks it a few time,
then falls asleep around it.
2
Goodnight, says the mother,
to her two small children,
and after she’s shut the door,
they scurry to window and open it.
In rushes the cool air,
while they gaze in awe and mystery,
at an October moon.
3
Goodnight, says the poet,
to his lady, may you sleep tight,
next to me, you feel just right.
4
Goodnight, whispers small fairies
to even smaller children
as they lay warm and comfortable
in their bed, thinking of what adventures
await them on the morrow.
5
Goodnight, whispers the ghosts
to the spirits through the wind
as it blows among the tall trees.
The bright moon laughs, and thinks
of old poems, long forgotten,
then decides, to pull an all nighter.
The Goodnight Poem for Her
by Amanda Lynn
First I wrote
a superb sunset sonnet for her,
then went on to write
an excellent evening epic;
Not to rest satisfied,
next came a great gloomy georgic;
then that which followed was
a not at all bad black ballad;
and to cap the evening
there came at last
a marvelous midnight muse,
which lead to the poem you now read
which, my dear love, is all for you.
I am sinking, sinking, sinking;
It is hard to sit upright!
Your lap is the softest pillow!
Good night, my Love, goodnight!
