Poems are a perfect avenue to exploring our feelings about roads. Here are some original poems that you will only find on Shadow of Iris. Take them for test drive and see if their metaphors jive with your own street smarts!
The Crossroads Poem
by Amanda Lynn
Just outside of the desert
at a crossroads not far from an exit ramp
there is an old pink cafe
open twenty four hours a day
they serve cold beers,
hamburgers with tabasco sauce,
and droopy salads
with funny little mushrooms
that do peculiar things to the drivers
when they get back on road.
Four Roads Poem
by Emma Blue
East is the sun.
It is red, sacred fire, blood, life;
some say the road
to success lies that way.
West is the moon.
It is black and full of old souls,
and some say the road
to death lies that way — and renewal.
North is the cold.
It is blue and purple and troubled
some say the road
to defeat lies that way — but also strength.
South is the warmth.
It is white and calm and easy
some say the road
to peace lies that way — but also weakness.
Choose carefully, and always
remember, that not matter what
some say, whatever road you choose,
you’ll have to make your own way.
Road to Iris Poem
by Justin Thyme
Fire up the imagination
watch a wave of travelers
come tumbling down the road,
these are the devoted,
young seekers of adventure
— sporting ascetics.
On foot, on bicycle, on horse,
with or without companion
mystical of temperament
and bewitched by deserts,
seekers of a bygone age
— romantic dreamers.
They head down the road
deserters of civilization,
modern nomads in search
of ancient dreams,
rugged poets for a new age
— symbols of liberty.
[This poems is based on a passage from the book, Silk Road: Monks, Warriors & Merchants, by Luce Boulnois.]
I shall be telling this with a sigh
Somewhere ages and ages hence:
Two roads diverged in a wood, and I—
I took the one less traveled by,
And that has made all the difference.
— Robert Frost
